A Cave: The Setting of The Greatest Gift of All Time

Nov 3, 2022

Christmas is a time of generosity, being present with those you love, and celebrating life together. At Majestic Caverns, we celebrate this season through cheer, events, special light shows in the caverns, and through remembering the reason we all give gifts.

Over 2,000 years ago, the greatest gift of all time entered the world in a humble setting, a cave. In Bethlehem, there are light limestone caves throughout the region that were used as natural animal shelters. The caverns environment would stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, making it a wonderful shelter that required little work to make fit for animals. They often would carve out a stone water trough for animals to use in the caverns for water. Early Christians believed that Jesus was born in the cave, which is why Constantine, in 325 AD created a replica of the cave they believed Jesus was born in within a church in Bethlehem.

Christmas can be a time of business and stress, but the beauty of Christ’s birth in the humble setting of a cave surrounded by animals, is that even though life may be overwhelming, and the world around you may be overwhelming, or like your circumstances aren’t what you would hope for. The most beautiful things can come out of those very stressful, strained places.

What if I told you the greatest gift of all time was given in a cave? It’s true! Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate gift from God to us. Jesus was born in a humble setting, and even though He was sinless, He came to earth as a baby so that He could identify with us and show us His love. As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, let’s remember why it’s such an important holiday. Jesus is the best thing that has ever happened to us, and He deserves our love and worship this season and always!
