Why Stewardship Matters

A Place Cared for by Generations of Family

A place like this isn’t built. It’s entrusted.

For generations, Majestic Caverns has been cared for—not just as a business, but as something worth preserving.

Because when something holds history, wonder, and the fingerprints of those who came before us… you don’t just manage it. You take care of it for the people who come next.
You protect it.
You honor it.
You share it.

That’s what stewardship means to us. And it’s why every family who walks through these caverns becomes part of something bigger than themselves.

For our family, this stewardship is rooted in something deeper. We believe this cave is part of God’s creation—something we’ve been entrusted to care for, protect, and share with others.
That belief shapes how we serve our guests, how we preserve this place, and how we tell its story.

Step Into America’s Story

Long before it became a place for family adventure, this cave was a place of survival, discovery, and legacy.

• A sacred site for Native Americans
• Encountered during the 1540 expedition of Hernando De Soto
• Documented in 1796 under President George Washington as the first recorded cave in the United States
• Mined for saltpeter during the Civil War
• Transformed through generations into a place families can experience today

This isn’t just history you read about.

It’s history you walk through.

Five Generations. One Responsibility.

In 1912, Ida Mathis made a decision that would shape the future of this place. At a time when the cave was valued for what could be taken from it, she chose to preserve it instead. Ida wasn’t just a landowner—she was a nationally recognized agricultural reformer, known as the “Economic Moses of the South,” who helped lead Alabama through one of its most difficult economic seasons. When mining the cave proved unprofitable, she didn’t walk away. She ensured it stayed in her family.

Most people would have sold it.
She chose to keep it.

Over a century later, that decision still matters.

Today, Majestic Caverns is still owned and operated by her descendants—five generations later—continuing the same mission of preserving, protecting, and sharing this place with others.

This isn’t just a business.

It’s a responsibility that has been passed down for generations.
