Underground Classroom
You want the best for your students. Join the adventure and bring your students’ classroom deep in our unforgettable Underground Classroom TODAY!

In-Depth Geological Learning
During the extended Underground Classroom, students will learn about stalactites, stalagmites, and more geographical information. Our guides will teach using the cave as the perfect backdrop for this educational presentation. This is the perfect environment for immersive education where students learn about rocks from within one!

Historical
Your students will learn about over 2,000 years of human history to which the caverns has served as a meaningful backdrop.
- A mastodon bone was found in the opening of our caverns from a young mastodon.
* Majestic Caverns has artifacts from over 2,000 years ago when the woodland Indians used our caverns as a sacred space for security and habitation. - Hernando DeSoto and his men came by the caverns and met with the Coosa Indians in the area by the Coosa River, a five minute drive from our park in 1540. This is where the city of Childersburg got its historic roots.
- The oldest cave graffiti in America is in our caverns which is celebrating its 300 year anniversary this year from its carved inscription in 1723.
- In 1796, George Stiggins, a presidential agent, wrote to our first President, President George Washington, describing the beauty of the cave as being more grand than the finest tapestries of Europe. President George Washington marked this caverns as the first cavern on record in the United States.
- The caverns was used to mine gun powder during the US Civil War in the 1860’s.
- The caverns was acquired in 1912 by Ida Mathis, who is an Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame Inductee for saving Alabama from economic ruin. She is a fascinating woman who was named the “Economic Moses of the South” and was invited to speak as far as Australia for her incredible work.
- The caverns was also used as a speakeasy in the 1920’s when America had a ban on liquor. There was a dance floor, live music, and a rowdy crowd that gave the cavern a short-lived title of “The Bloody Bucket” before federal agents raided and ended the illegal actions.

Artifacts & Fossils
During the Underground Classroom students will have the unique opportunity to learn about sedimentary layers and how fossils are formed. To accompany this learning, we have a time where students get to see and touch a Mastadon bone that was found in Majestic Caverns. This is an experience students talk about and remember for years.

We have a document just for you if you’d like to print off information about our Underground Classroom.

Your guided caverns tour lasts nearly one hour.
What should I wear inside Majestic Caverns?
The temperature inside the cave is 60°F year-round. In the summer, it will be refreshingly cool, and in the winter it will be a comfortable warmer temperature. Because the entrance to our cave is a steep ramped tunnel we recommend wearing shoes with traction on the bottom, although there is a handrail for steadying yourself if your shoes are smooth on bottom.
Is Parking Free?
Yes, all parking is free!
Are strollers or baby back-packs allowed inside the cave?
Yes, they are. Our cave has a tunnel, making it accessible for you and your young ones.
What should I NOT bring to the park?
The following items are prohibited:
- Alcohol or drugs
- Magic Markers, spray paint, and aerosol cans
- Knives or chains
- Weapons

- Cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or chewing tobacco. Majestic Caverns is a tobacco free environment

Is Majestic Caverns handicap accessible?
We are handicap accessible throught the Healing All Cathedral Room, which is the first room within our caverns and is accessible through a ramp. There is a passageway that narrows as our guests go towards our back room that would require someone to be able to walk through the back area while their wheelchair is folded in order to navigate through that narrow passageway. If the handicap guest is capable of walking a short distance that is supplied with a railing while the wheelchair is folded and brought through, our handicap guests will be able to see the entirety of the tour. If our guest is not capable of entering in the back of the cave, we have discount tours that still allow the guest to enjoy the Healing All Cathedral room within the caverns. Due to the natural environment of the cave, some areas had to be steeply ramped and will require an additional helper to navigate. Warning: For cave visitors in a wheelchair, it is required that you bring a capable assistant to help you with navigating the steep portions of the cave.
Is Majestic Caverns open for the holidays?
We are open all holidays except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day.
Are pets allowed at Majestic Caverns?
Yes, pets are allowed in the park as long as they remain on a leash. Inside the cave we only allow pets if you are capable of holding them throughout the tour. People who bring their pets are responsible for cleaning up their pet’s waste. People with pets also will be held responsible for any damage their pet creates. Because of the indoor-outdoors nature of a cave, we cannot have any animals using the restroom inside the caverns, so they must be small enough to be held through the entirety of the tour.
