Majestic Caverns Named One of America’s Incredible Caves, And Why Its Story Matters in 2026

But during this America 250 season, we also want families to know something even deeper.
Majestic Caverns is not only beautiful. It is known as America’s Most Historic Cave.
Formerly DeSoto Caverns, Majestic Caverns holds more than 2,000 years of human history. Native Americans used the cave as a shelter and burial place. Hernando DeSoto’s journey through the region connected the caverns to the age of exploration. In 1796, Benjamin Hawkins wrote to George Washington about the wonder of the cave, helping make it the first officially recorded cave in the United States. During the Civil War, the cave was used in saltpeter mining for gunpowder. During Prohibition, it became part of another unforgettable chapter of American history. Later, Ida Elizabeth Brandon Mathis, an Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame inductee, helped preserve the land for future generations.
Today, families can walk through that story on a guided cavern tour, enjoy the cool 60-degree cave air, experience a seasonal laser light show, and spend the day exploring above-ground attractions designed for all ages.
