Majestic Caverns isn’t just a cave—it’s a living timeline carved through thousands of years. From mastodon bones discovered near the entrance to burial sites from the Woodland Indian Period, the history of this cavern runs deep. It was used as shelter and a sacred burial site by Native Americans, visited by Hernando De Soto, recorded by George Washington as the first cave in the nation, and even played a role during the Civil War. Later, it hosted a Prohibition-era honky-tonk, and in 1912, was purchased by Ida Mathis, an Alabama icon whose legacy continues today through her descendants who still own and operate the cave.

Beat the Alabama heat in the naturally cool, 60-degree cave! Our guided tours not only share the awe-inspiring beauty of the underground world—including flowstone, stalactites, stalagmites, and one of the longest hanging draperies in the world—but also include a seasonal laser light show and a visit to the spectacular underground waterfall.

4. Great for First-Time Cave Explorers
Our cave’s pathways were designed with families in mind. There are no stairs on the tour route, making it stroller accessible, and we even have a handicap-accessible bathroom with a changing table inside the cave.We are handicap accessible throughout the Healing All Cathedral Room, the first and most iconic chamber in the caverns, which is reached by a ramp. While most of the tour is accessible, the path narrows toward the back of the cave and may require guests using wheelchairs to fold their chair and walk a short distance with a railing. Guests who can do so will experience the full tour, including the underground waterfall. If not, we offer discounted tours that still showcase the breathtaking Healing All Cathedral Room.
Note: Due to natural formations, some areas of the cave have steeper ramps. For visitors in wheelchairs, a capable assistant is required to navigate these sections safely.
