DeSoto Caverns is the most historic caverns in the nation with history you and your kids will learn while inside the exact room the monumental moments took place within! You’ll hear about the woodland Indian period (over 2,000 years ago), the Age of Exploration, the Civil War, the Prohibition, and more. Your guide will show you and your students the fault line inside the caverns, talk about the geological process of formations and their growth, and share with you the variety of formations you’ll see while on your tour, which lasts about an hour. The caverns’ first room is as long as a football field and taller than a 10 story building, which will make an exciting introduction to your students to the world of what could lie beneath their feet.
Learning comes to life both underground and above ground with the many interactive attractions in the park. At the Gemstone Panning station, you can pan for gemstones like prospectors did back during the Alabama Gold Rush. There is also a reference chart at the panning attraction so that you can label and understand more about the gems you discover and keep during your journey. There are over a dozen attractions in the park providing your family with lots of opportunities for hands on fun and learning.
